Analyzing and Writing Custom Mathematical Essays

← Back to WRITING TUTORIAL

One of the best things about writing custom mathematical essays is that they actually help people to grab the concepts of math better. It is like explaining math in writing helps a student to grasp the meaning of it. That is why many instructors assign mathematical essay and research paper writing.

The first step in mathematical essay writing is to have a problem. The next step is giving the answer. This may sound different because most narrative writing does not give the answer until the end of the essay. In fact, the best hook for writing mathematical essays is the answer. It is important then to explain how the answer was found. Writing mathematical essays for college or university requires simple writing so the steps can be easily understood as the writer takes the problem and shows how he/she found the answer. This does not mean to use incorrect spelling and grammar though.

Take the time writing the problem so all the words are spelled correctly and the problem is written in a way the reader will clearly understand it. Never assume the reader knows what you are talking about when it comes to math. Write the problem as if the reader has never had any type of math. Describe the complete problem with each step outlined in a way they can know for sure what the problem is asking about. Consider this example:

"Five men were paid fifty dollars each for working eight hours during a day. They worked five days a week with the weekends off. How much together would they get at the end of the month?"

There would be problems with the problem. Many readers would assume $50 a day for seven days a week or $50 a day for 30 days. Spelling out the terms is important in solving the math problem. Consider this example:

"Five men are paid fifty dollars for eight hours during a day. How much did the men make together in 20 days."

Simply state the problem in terms the reader can understand. Next, give the answer to the problem, and then show how the solution was found. State any assumptions that may underlie the formula. The solution would be: 5 men X $50 X 20 = $5,000.

The next step in writing mathematical problems is to explain how the problem will be solved. Use easy terms that the reader can clearly understand. Never assume anything. Label any diagrams, tables, graphs, or other visual representation in the essay. It is important to clearly define any variables that may be used. Try to be as specific as possible such as in the example given. It states the days as well as the pay per person. Explain the formula in simple terms.

Always give any acknowledgement due. Plagiarism is wrong and most instructors will fail a student plagiarizing. If a specific textbook is used, give the name of the textbooks and the authors and/or editors. If you quote your professor, give him or her credit.

One of the biggest problems students make in any type of custom essay writing is to fail to spend time proofreading it. Take a few minutes to check to see that the answer is correct using any formulas to find the solution. Be sure that the solution is correct. Take the problem from the beginning working it until the solution is found. Are you sure that you have found the answer to the question that has been asked?

Again, spend time proofreading the essay. Are all the words spelled correctly? Have you used correct punctuation? Check the grammar. Rewrite the essay as needed. Ask a co-student to proofread the final draft of the paper. Rewrite as necessary. Read the essay out loud as you check for errors. All essays should be rewritten at least three times. This is true for mathematical essays, too.
