Research papers are inevitably a part of students' lives. This spans from the moment they choose their degree until the moment that they are about to do their dissertation to graduate. Research writing brings forth a lot of anxiety for people, especially for those who are unfamiliar and are alienated by a 5, 000-page word count and a very specific citation format. While there are numerous websites that teach people how to effectively write research papers, there are underrepresented pieces of advice that people often forget when it comes to research and writing. However, being discouraged to write is ironically a pivotal part of actually writing. This emotion enables writers to be warier about their writing, therefore substantially improves the quality of the output.
The first step to writing a research paper is to be specific about what the topic is about. This does not necessarily have to mean that you have a ready-made, cookie-cutter title about what the research is about. This can simply mean that you have an outline that is straightforward. You have a basic understanding of what you are going to tackle and, most importantly and oftentimes neglected by writers (especially those working in the legal field), a direction for how you want your article to be. Papers are tedious work, surely. But once you are able to take the research and cut it down into smaller fractions of work, it makes working flow smoothly. Writers this way can carefully analyze and dissect the lapses of a work easier because there is a trajectory to be followed. Secondly, it is important to understand that there is no such thing as "over-researching" a particular topic. Individuals often stop midway of researching as they think they have sufficient information.
However, a true researcher and writer understands that there is always more literature to incorporate into the work to make it more substantive as a project. Having data and background information on the topic you are about to tackle allows your research to have more fluidity. It also allows you to be more grounded into the study, making your output more realistic than just an overlap of countless words.
Third step would, of course, tie together your work by spending innumerable hours behind a computer screen, attempting to stay sane as you get migraines from writing. Upon completion of this part of writing the paper, the next step would be to let it undergo revision. This means skimming and reading through your work multiple times. What is helpful is to give yourself time away from the paper before indulging and writing again. Oftentimes, because we feel pressured by time and other circumstances surrounding the paper, we are unable to fully flesh out our creativity and knowledge onto a single piece of work. Once we take time to refresh our minds away from the paper, we would be able to have more substantial work.
Now, we have a research paper completed. However, how do we actually achieve the prime status of learning proper research? This can truly only be achieved through writing more and spending more time being productive. The only way to master the craft is to partake in its existence through accomplishing the task itself. Most researchers, published or not, would agree that there have been countless rejections and an innumerable number of revisions before they were able to create work that they could truly call their own. A good addition to be able to fasten or curate more knowledge on the craft is to go into mentorship wherein a senior researcher or writer would assist you and grant you with the necessary supplementary knowledge.
The research field is not easy to grasp. It takes years before one can truly say that they know how to properly research. The technicalities are rough and rigid. The competition within the industry itself requires a lot of patience and acceptance. You should accept your limitations and know how to ask for assistance to have more substantial knowledge on concrete steps you can take to be productive.
